Asians and Pacific Islanders to dialogue on civil rights issues.
The inaugural event debuted visionary concepts for EPIC, Empowering Pacific Islander
Communities, a grassroots campaign specific to addressing the needs of various Pacific
Islander communities.
Presentations from founding members in various modules throughout the conference
highlighted community concerns for addressing poverty, underrepresentation in
education, wage and career gaps, health disparities, violence prevention, and other high
risk community needs.
A study conducted by the Pacific Islander Pipeline program underscored the urgency of
EPIC's work.
"We've been preparing for this moment to arrive" said Sefa Aina, a founding member and
Director Asian And Pacific Islander Center, Pomona College. "Its a lot of work, but we've
taken it by storm. That's just us- EPIC"
EPIC is a collaboration of young Pacific Islanders leaders and scholars throughout the
state of California. Their primary mission is to improve the quality of life for Pacific
Islanders.
Founding member Joseph Fa'avae in an exclusive interview with Pacifika Voice said, " It's
our coming out party".
And a party it was, as EPIC members were sought out at the conference by
philanthropists, foundations and organizations interested in the work.
