Carson, CA(Pacifika Voice) August 4, 2009-- The Samoan Federation of area chiefs and a collaborative of
community partners reclaimed Samoan Flag Day this week. Havoc wreaked by gang members at a fatal
event shooting which took place last year almost derailed the signature community event.
“The community has relied on us for the last 24 years to hold this event, “said High Chief Loa Pele Faletogo,
President and Executive Director of The Samoan Federation. We must restore the faith of our families and
the community at large and we’ve been working hard all year long to rebuild that trust.”
At the demand of an enraged South Bay community, the Samoan Federation called on public officials to help
restore public trust in this small town community. The Samoan Federation organized a series of meetings
with local, state, federal, and Samoan government officials to address safety concerns at community events.
The partnerships with Los Angeles County Supervisor, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Mayor Jim Dear and the Carson
City Council, as well as the California State Assemblyman Warren Furutani garnered over $35,000 of pubic
safety and operational cost earmarked to rebuild pubic trust.
“This is a huge win for the community; with the state of the nation and the devastation of our economies of
scale, public trust is the most important investment our local leaders can make,” said Esera Mamoe, a
Samoan Federation leader and community activist. “Community programs such as Flag Day are often the
first on the chopping board. We are pleased that our elected officials recognize the importance of stabilizing
community and ensuring that at risk needs are met and treated with the sensitivity and dignity they
deserve.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department will have high visibility and strong police presence at all
entrances and roadways. A special Gang unit will also be on site making close observations and to deter
criminal element.
“We closed down 192nd at Main Street to slow down traffic,” said Sergeant Calzada of the Carson Sheriff’s
department. We also have 3 other Sheriff stations on tactical alert and prepared to respond if needed.”
Samoan Flag Day is an annual cultural celebration of allegiance to the United States and Samoan Americans’
respective island nations. The event takes place all week at Victoria Regional Park in the city of Carson.
